Everything in Harness lives in one of three areas: the calendar where you teach, the people you teach and bill, and the finances that track the money. A lesson ties them together. You teach it, mark attendance, and the charge lands on the family’s account, ready for their next invoice.

Calendar

The calendar is where your week lives. Everything you schedule goes on the calendar as an event: a lesson, a gig, a day off, or something you haven’t given a time yet. An event becomes a lesson once you add students to it, and a weekly lesson is set up once and repeats on its own. After you teach, mark attendance and write notes from the calendar or the Lessons page. Two more things sit on the calendar. Annotations are your own colored bars, like teaching hours or makeup slots, and they hold no students or charges. Scheduling links are pages where families pick a lesson time from your openings.

People

People holds everyone in your studio: the students you teach and the parents, guardians, and payers around them. People → Students lists everyone you teach, and adding a student also sets up who pays for them. People → Contacts lists every person once, so a parent of two students is one contact, and editing them changes both. Each student has a primary contact, who is billed for their lessons. Each contact’s Involved in choices decide which lesson emails they get and what they see in the student portal, where families follow along. New students can also come to you, through your sign-up form or a booking from a scheduling link.

Finances

Finances is where every dollar in and out is tracked. An account is who you bill, usually a family paying for one or more students. A student’s billing rules say which account pays, and you can split the cost with a second account, like a scholarship covering half. Charges come from lessons you mark, recurring charges like monthly tuition, and extra charges you add. An invoice collects an account’s charges, and the family settles it with a payment, either one you record by hand or one they make online. The account’s balance is what the family owes on invoices you’ve sent. Finances → Transactions is the full history of your money. A mistake is fixed with a new entry, not by changing the old one, so the history stays true. Expenses, mileage, and reports round out your books.

How they fit together

A lesson travels through all three areas, from the calendar to a payment. You put the lesson on the calendar with a student on it. When you mark attendance, Harness charges whoever pays for that student. When the account’s billing cycle comes around, an invoice collects its waiting charges, made by you or by Harness. The family pays, and the balance and transaction history update on their own. People holds the chain together. The student is on the lesson, their primary contact is billed, and each contact’s choices decide who hears about what. Families see charges only once they’re on an invoice you’ve sent, never on a draft. Moving a lesson on the calendar emails no one. Two choices shape how this runs in your studio. If you charge per lesson, leave a lesson’s payment on with a price, and marking attendance charges the family. For a flat monthly fee, click the dollar icon (Disable Payment) when you make the lesson and bill the tuition as a recurring charge instead. The Billing automation setting decides how far Harness goes with invoices: Manual leaves them to you, Draft for review makes a draft you check and send, and Full auto sends it. See Automatic billing.

Your plan

Your plan decides how many students you can have and how much Harness does on its own. The Hobby plan is free and holds up to 5 students, counting active and inactive ones. The Professional plan removes the limit and adds Draft for review and Full auto, online payments, invoice reminders, and scheduling links. Every new studio starts with 30 days of Professional, with no card needed. Each studio has one teacher, with one login. Your plan compares the two.
